Organisation

A tumor can be benign or malignant. The uncertainty whether a tumor is benign or malignant can be a heavy burden. The orthopedic tumor consultation-hour deals with benign or malign neoplasms of the bone or the soft-tissue. We are specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of these tumor types. Our aim is to diagnoss the tumor as quick as possible. To achieve this, intensive consultations between the treating orthopedists and more, particularly specialized doctors of the Saarland University Hospital are held. These doctors are colleagues of the Department for Radiology (for interpretations of the x-ray, CT and MRI-images), the Institute for Pathology (for histologic diagnostic of the tumor), the Department of Nuclear Medicine (for interpretation of bone scans), the Oncologic Department of the Medical Center (for chemotherapies), the Oncologic Department of the Center for Paediatric and Juvenile Medicine (for Treatment of young patients) and if necessary external specialists. To make a definite histological diagnosis it is often necessary to do a biopsy. By this team-work we can make up an individually designed, detailed treatment-concept according to the state of the art.

Benign of malignant Neoplasm ?

Bone tumors and soft tissue tumors are rare. In spite of great progress of cell- and molecular-biology the cause of most bone tumors and soft-tissue tumors remains unknown. The group of bone and soft tissue tumors consists of different types. Every type shows a certain behavior pattern and has to be treated individually. Bone and soft tissue tumors are subdivided by their cellular type and their ability to spread throughout the body (metastasize). Benign tumors do not metastasize, malignant bone or soft tissue tumors do metastasize.

Frequent benign bone tumors include Enchondromas, Multiple Enchondromatosis, Cartilaginous Exostosis (so called Osteochondromas), Fibrous Cortical Defects and the Non-ossifying Fibromas, Fibrous Dysplasias, Bone Cysts, Aneurysmal Bone Cysts, Osteoid Osteomas, Osteoblastomas, Chondroblastomas and Chondromyxoid Fibromas.

Frequent benign tumors of the soft tissue include Lipomas, Haemangiomas Fibromas and Fibromatosis, Neurofibromas and Neurofibromatosis, Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis (PVNS), Myositis Ossificans, Ganglia and Synovial Cysts
.

Treatment

Benign bone tumors and tumors of the soft tissue can heal or should be observed for years. If they show special symptoms they can oftentimes be treated by small surgical procedures.

Frequent malignant bone tumors include Osteosarcomas, Chondrosarcomas, Malignant Fibrous Histiocytomas of the bone, Ewing Sarcomas, Malignant Lymphomas of the bone, Multiple Myelomas and the by far more frequent metastases of other tumors
.

Frequent malignant tumors of soft tissues (Sarcomas) include Liposarcomas, Malignant Fibrous Histiocytomas, Synovial Sarcomas, Leiomyosarcomas, Rhabdomyosarcomas and Angiosarcomas.

Malignant bone tumors and soft tissue tumors are quite rare. Oftentimes they require a combined therapy which consists of surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Formerly the surgical intervention often meant amputation. Today arms and legs can frequently - particularly with early diagnosis and intervention - be preserved, even with complete removal of the malignant tissue.
